Quick Summary
The Optimization and Testing
In recent months, we’ve seen a growing number of inquiries about engine tuning for boats.
The conditions for ECU programming and performance upgrades on diesel engines are essentially the same at sea as on land—but to truly demonstrate the real-world impact on the water, we decided to conduct precise before-and-after testing together with the customer.
Initial measurements were taken with the boat in stock condition, in collaboration with the customer. We then removed the engine control unit (ECU) and brought it to OptiOne for software extraction.
Working alongside our experienced marine technicians, we discussed the most suitable performance level based on the boat’s original setup.
An increase of 40–50 hp and 120 Nm of torque was deemed a safe and effective upgrade—though more power was available if desired.
The tuning was completed in just a few hours, and it was time to reinstall the ECU and hit the water for performance testing.

Customer Feedback: A Real Transformation
I had a tuning box installed on my previous boat engine—a Volvo Penta D4—but I was never really satisfied. This time, I wanted to try a proper ECU remap on my Volvo Penta D6 310 hp.
The difference is incredible—unbelievably better and smoother engine performance! Unlike before, the boat doesn’t lift its nose dramatically to get up on plane. Now it rises more horizontally and effortlessly. I only need about half throttle to get the boat out of the water and onto plane. It’s simply a more pleasant experience.
I can even cruise at 18 knots while planing, which wasn’t possible before—it used to take at least 23 knots. This is truly night and day compared to what a tuning box can offer.
Throttle response is instant and fantastic. For example, if I’m cruising slowly at 8–9 knots and add a bit of throttle, the boat climbs out of the water instantly and takes off.
I even notice the difference at low speed, like when reversing in a harbor or maneuvering while docking—it’s more precise and easier to control.
Now I get to enjoy more of the nature around me in the archipelago—and I’m absolutely going to save a significant amount of fuel. I highly recommend this upgrade to any Volvo Penta owner.
