What to expect from an optimization?

What to expect from an optimization?

Many people ask what they can actually expect from an engine optimization. The short answer is: It depends.
The result depends on several factors, and here we’ll help clear things up.

True engine optimization

Let’s start by clarifying that we do real engine optimization.
We don’t install power boxes or manipulate signals to “fool” the system. Instead, we directly modify the engine’s original ECU software—adjusting a wide range of parameters.

Unlike power boxes, which typically only adjust one or two values, our method is exactly how manufacturers themselves tune different performance levels from the same engine platform.
Same process, better results.

Different starting points yield different results

The outcome of an optimization depends heavily on the type of engine. In general, turbocharged diesel engines see greater gains than naturally aspirated petrol engines.

Why? Because a turbo engine gives us more to work with—like boost pressure—while naturally aspirated engines have limited tuning potential unless they’re equipped with forced induction (like a turbo or supercharger).

Manufacturers tune the engines Too

Car brands often sell the same engine with different power ratings, based on software alone.
Take Volkswagen’s 2.0 TDI for example—it’s available in four different versions: 75, 102, 122, and 150 hp.
After tuning, all of these can reach 185 hp.

Going from 75 to 185 hp is a 140% increase—you’ll feel that. But if you already have the 150 hp version, the gain is smaller (35 hp / 23%), even though the driving experience still improves significantly.

Noticeable performance gains

No matter which engine version you start with, you’ll feel a difference.
But naturally, a 140% gain makes a much bigger impression than a 23% gain.

“Even modest increases in power and torque can transform how your car feels to drive”

Sharper Throttle Response

No matter what engine you have, you’ll notice a faster, more responsive throttle.
The car will feel livelier, more alert, and quicker off the line—even with relatively small performance gains.

More usable torque

Torque is where you’ll likely feel the biggest change. While many people focus on horsepower, torque is what moves the car, especially at lower RPMs—and that’s where you’ll feel it most during everyday driving.

We always aim to deliver torque earlier and keep it available longer across the rev range. This applies to horsepower as well—but again, torque is king in real-world driving.

Torque matters most in daily driving

Horsepower is more noticeable at high RPMs, but in city traffic, overtaking, or low-speed climbs, torque is what gives you that solid, effortless pull.
Even if peak torque gains aren’t huge, having more of it at lower revs makes the car much easier and more enjoyable to drive.

So, What should you expect?

As we’ve mentioned, many factors influence the final result—but you can expect:

  • Better low-end torque

  • More sustained power delivery

  • Improved performance at higher RPMs

  • More efficient combustion

  • Better fuel economy potential

Turbo Diesels Deliver the Most

You’ll see the most significant performance and fuel-saving improvements with large turbocharged diesel engines—especially those with higher displacement.
Naturally aspirated petrol engines and small-displacement engines tend to have smaller gains, but even then, the improvement is often noticeable.

Small Cars, Big Differences

We’ve had many customers with small city cars—say, 1.2–1.4-liter engines with 80–90 hp—who’ve seen just a 5–10% increase in power, yet claim it feels like a completely different car.
