More and more motorhome owners are discovering the benefits of engine optimization. We’ve all been there – long, sluggish uphill climbs where you have to downshift multiple gears and still struggle to maintain speed. The engine runs hot, it sounds rough, vibrates, and frustration builds.
Why Does This Happen?
The motorhome market is highly competitive. To keep both cost and weight down, manufacturers often build the largest possible motorhome on the smallest possible chassis and equip it with a base engine – while offering larger engines as expensive upgrade options. This saves money, which can instead be spent on interior features and comfort, and it reduces weight, allowing more people to legally drive the vehicle and making it more widely usable.
So What Can You Do About It?
Fortunately, there’s a simple solution. Virtually all modern engines can be optimized electronically. Most of them are designed for significantly more power but are deliberately limited.
Developing a new engine is extremely costly, so manufacturers often create one engine platform and then electronically restrict it to offer multiple lower-powered variants at different price points. In other words, many engines are technically identical – just held back by software.

Example
One of the most common engines found in motorhomes is the Fiat Ducato 2.3 Multijet. This engine comes in four different versions: 120, 140, 160, and 180 hp – with the 120 and 140 hp variants being the most common.
The price difference between the 120 hp and the 180 hp version in the same motorhome can range from SEK 30,000 to SEK 60,000, depending on the brand, model, and dealer – and even then, all you’re getting is the stock 180 hp factory tune.

Power Where It Matters Most
When we optimize the 120 hp engine in the example above, you get 200 hp. But even more important than the horsepower is the torque – which in this case increases from 320 Nm to 460 Nm, a 44% increase.
What truly makes the difference is when and how the power is delivered. In its original state, the engine delivers peak torque at around 2,400 rpm, and maximum horsepower (120 hp) doesn’t arrive until roughly 3,000 rpm.
In other words, you only get full performance in a relatively narrow rev band between 2,400 and 3,000 rpm.
After the optimization, you’ll hit peak torque (320 Nm) much earlier, already at around 1,700 rpm – and the former max horsepower of 120 hp arrives at just 2,100 rpm. From there, both power and torque continue to rise and hold strong across the rev range.
Post-optimization, you’ll enjoy more usable power from 1,700 rpm all the way to redline than what the engine originally delivered at its very peak.
